About the author & blog
About Karel Mc Intosh – Blog author
Since 1999, I’ve worked in communications in various areas – print media, public relations (consultancy and in-house), lecturing, writing and editing. In July of 2006, I added social media to my portfolio, and to say that I love it is an understatement; my red and white blood cells are constantly making room for the blog c
ells that replicate every few hours!
So apart from authoring the Caribbean Public Relations blog, what do I do? Based in my homeland, Trinidad, I work in the tourism industry as a Corporate Communications Coordinator, where my main role is to assist with promoting Trinidad and Tobago (two islands, one country), as a major, tourist destination. On my own, I assist businesses with new media ventures, whether it’s advice about the best strategies for social media campaigns or creating blogs. My writing life is also pretty active, as I’m a Columnist with the Jamaica Gleaner, I’m a volunteer Writer with Global Voices Online, and I’m a Freelance Writer. Added to that I’m on the International Advisory Board for the International Association of Business Communicator’s (IABC) Communications World magazine, which I also write for from time to time. So you see, my life is pretty filled with communications, whether it be at my day job, or dabbling at night or the wee hours of the morning with writing and new media projects.
Qualifications-wise, I hold an MSc in Corporate Communication (Distinction) from Thames Valley University, England, and a BSc in Government with a minor in International Relations (Upper Second Class Honours) from the University of the West Indies, Trinidad Campus. But, I’m not one to harp on professional achievements. If you get to know me better, you’ll discover that I’m just a blogger who loves to laugh, and is very happy as long as I have hi-speed Internet J!
About the blog The Caribbean Public Relations blog was created with the main objective to provide insight about public relations, marketing and social media in the Caribbean, as well as how to market to the Caribbean Diaspora worldwide, especially since there is a serious dearth of information about Caribbean public relations and marketing in books, journals, academic fora and websites. You will also find discussions about trends that affect communicators worldwide. So, if you want to learn about the history of public relations in the Caribbean, social media uses in the region, online reputation, Internet penetration rates in the Caribbean, or general musings on communications and social media, then you’re in the right place.
I invite you to get comfy, and stay as long as you like. Feel free to email me with comments, and suggestions, at caribbeanprblog@yahoo.com. If you’re also interested in guest blogging, please contact me.
