Soca Warriors, publicity and country branding

The Soca Warriors may not win the World Cup, but they sure have won loads of publicity and goodwill for their country, Trinidad and Tobago, and have enhanced brand T&T.
After all, for the past few weeks, Trinidad and Tobago was featured on highly viewed pages such as AOL, MSN and the like. Type Soca Warriors and Trinidad and Tobago in a search engine and many options come up. The international media have also mentioned us in print, radio and television form. Maybe at times we were peeved that some are yet to realise we are called the Soca Warriors and not the Soccer Warriors, but you win some, you lose some. Besides, we love the fact that some of the media have reneged on the bad things they said about us, simply because we’ve shown them in good identity fashioning, that we’re not walkovers.

With the slogan, “the fighting spirit of the Caribbean”, the Soca Warriors have demonstrated passion, determination and class, qualities, which people will associate with Trinidad and Tobago. Many are hoping that tourism will rise because of it.

The story of the underdogs (we’re not underdogs by the way, we’re just here for the first time), has captured the hearts of many and they feel for us because we’ve risen to the occassion and shown that passion, determination and love for one’s country can sometimes create all the drive and potential one needs to succeed. Trinis, who have flocked to Germany, have also shown people just how much fun it is to be a Trini, and have shared our vibrant culture.

Eternal optimists, the people of Trinidad and Tobago, myself included, are hopeful for a win against Paraguay on Tuesday coming. We’re even hopeful that England will beat Sweden, we’re going to beat Paraguay by many goals, and we’re going to make it into the second round. Wow, that would be like winning the World Cup!

Like we say, “win or lose we fightin’”!
