IABC comes to Trinidad and Tobago

Great news! The International Business Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Trinidad and Tobago Chapter was formed last month. According to the Trinidad and Tobago Express newspaper, dated August 30 2006, 21 local corporate communication and marketing professionals became members of the IABC in August, thereby establishing the local chapter.

According to the newspaper article, “local communicators will now have the content, credibility and global connections to excel in their careers”. Judette Coward-Puglisi, President of the IABC Trinidad and Tobago chapter, stated:

“Essentially, IABC is a learning community of professionals committed to
improving the effectiveness of organisations through strategic
communications.”

Coward-Puglisi is joined by an impressive board lineup, which includes some of T&T’s well known corporate communication practitioners.

The establishment of this new group is exciting, and hopefully will offer development for local professionals. It will be very interesting to see how this new group’s role will develop in tandem with that of the Public Relations Association of Trinidad and Tobago. Will the IABC Trinidad and Tobago Chapter be another present but largely inactive association, or a force for developing and improving public relations and communications as a profession? If Coward-Puglisi and her team approach their new task with the same zeal with which they established the Association of Female Executives of Trinidad and Tobago, we can count on the new chapter being an active, exciting group.

As the current president of IABC T&T rest assured Karel that we will be dynamic. Our objectives are clear: to provide local communicators with the connections, credibility and content to excel in their careers and to ground our profession in the existing research and measurement models.

This aspect has been lacking in our profession and accounts for why communicators and PR professionals say that they are excluded from the table. Fortunately, we have seen some positive signs; companies like Guardian Holding Limited, the Tourism Development Company and others have successfully aligned their communication functions to their business goals. Still we have a long journey ahead.

I hope that you join IABC T&T, your ideas and energy would be welcomed.

On another note, what would your Caribbean PR tour entail?

Basically, it would just be a group of practitioners travelling throughout the Caribbean islands, meeting practitioners from other islands, and sharing ideas, whether informally or formally.
