Gatekeepers, media and activists in Trinidad and Tobago

Over the past weeks, lobby groups, specifically those lobbying against ALCOA’s impending smelter, have received extensive coverage by Trinidad and Tobago’s media. Almost every day there is at least one newspaper report that covers a lobby group. At least once a week you can also expect to see a TV news report that covers protests against the smelter or even high food prices.

  • , reminds the public and specifically lobby groups “that media houses all have editors (who are sometimes called gatekeepers) whose responsibility is to determine what should be allowed through the gate into the public realm”.
