Communicating with friends and family

Relationships demand communication, and if you want to decrease the amount of stress that comes with arguments and misunderstandings, you’ve got to create some coping mechanisms. As communications professionals, we learn how to create strategies and find ways to achieve compromise. So shouldn’t we also try to use the same strategies we apply to corporate communication and public relations to our personal lives? For example, if you have an argument with your family or friends, what do you do? Vent and not let the other person express himself or herself? Or do you vent and give that person the opportunity to air their side of the story. Of course dealing with personal issues is different to dealing with professional issues since you’re likely to be more emotional. However, if we stop to think for a moment, the reality is that if we use a little psychology, some tenets of dialogue and negotiation, communication in our personal lives, our relationships would be much better.
