Using technology to enhance your communications career

How can you leverage your communications career through the use of technology? This is the question I’ll be answering on Friday at the IABC T&T one-day seminar, “The Future’s not that Scary: Connecting Communications Theory with Real World Practice”. Hosted by the Trinidad and Tobago Chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators, the audience will primarily consist of communications students of the University of the West Indies (UWI). To me, leveraging your career has much to do with your ability as a person to show that you have skills that can support a company’s success drive, and your knowledge of how to make that happen, whether it’s through using innovative methods or capitalising on trends. Dabbling in new media like blogs and podcasts can certainly bring rewards for young practitioners. Juss take a look at bloggers like Stephen Davies from England, and Paull Young of Australia who used social media to establish careers and demonstrate their skill and capabilities. Within recent times, several people have written about using blogs to jumpstart a career. While it has worked for some, I think we still need to be grounded in reality and remember that what works for Paull, may not work all. These are just some of the thoughts I have on the topic. Generally, my presentation will focus on what you need to do to have a successful career, how you can use technology for personal branding, and how to use technology to drive better communications efforts.

The seminar promises to be an exciting one with the morning session comprising presentations, and the afternoon session featuring roundtable discussions, speed dating style. The presentation themes include:

Karel, thank you for the kind words!

Maybe when I can afford my dream holiday to the Caribbean we can meet up for a chat?

Best,

Stephen

Karel,

You delivered a brilliant presentation. You were able to open up the thinking of many junior and senior communicators in the audience. In marketing communications as we continue to thin slice our audiences, we are constantly looking for new channels for our messages that are specific to our target audiences.

Your presentation showed us the new direction of future communications and alerted many of us to the fact that we need to move with the times or risk being left behind.

I have asked our Professional Development team to convene a panel to discuss Future Communications at our June IABC T&T meeting.

Thanks Judette. Glad to have delivered. The seminar was fantastic! All the presenters did a wonderful job.

Stephen, a chat would be great! :)
