Advertising Sir V.S. Naipaul

Nobel Laureate and Caribbean writer extraordinaire, Sir Vidia S. Naipaul is currently in Trinidad, as the University of the West Indies (UWI)celebrates his works. In addition to advertising in the newspapers etc, UWI is also (expectedly and justifiably) hyping the even on campus. It’s a given that somebody/ bodies mount outdoor advertisements and billboards. But, I thought it would be nice to show you a photo of them actually putting up the signboard. After all, we’ve got to give props to the workmen who make public relations tacticals a reality.

As a literary person, I love Naipaul’s works, especially “House for Mr. Biswas”. However, his non committment to recognising Trinidad and Tobago as his country of origin, give me a sense of disenchantment. We need to understand our roots and appreciate the fact that a writer’s mission is to discover home and then place it on the map.

Advertising is overrated.
