Politics and social media in the Caribbean

In what is a slow, but growing, trend among Caribbean political parties, the Jamaica Labour Party has taken advantage of technology by publishing their advertisments on www.youtube.com.
Spurred by the ever-growing popularity of the Barbados Free Press blog, the ruling party, the Barbados Labour Party started its own blog, as has the Opposition, the Democratic Labour Party.
Internet penetration rates in Barbados are very high. This and the fact that some citizens do not view the media as being unbiased and objective in its coverage contribute to people’s frequent logging on to BFP. BFP has an average of 100,000 visitors a month and has a steady top 40 position on wordpress’s top of the day blogs. Based on this, I guess it wasn’t hard for the politicians to realise that they needed to jump on an online platform to counteract what they would view as opposing views.
