I dont know if I wholeheartedly agree with that statement.
I think its more the deluge of marketing and advertising rather than the content that starts to get to us.
Personally I’m cool with seeing an ad the first two or so times just to get a sense of the product and whether i’d be interested. its more the way the ads constantly bombard us that gets to you.
bad methaphor but it sort of reminds me a bit of panhandlers. if walking down the street i see one panhandler i may stop, have some emphathy for him and consider giving him some change. but if every three blocks i constantly run into panhandlers it sort of becomes almost like harassment and you just get upset with it
@jdid - well, do you walk down the street to find a panhandler? That is sort of the point I was making. I don’t wake up in the morning with the wish to see advertisements. I don’t even know people in the advertising community who want to see ads other than on a professional level.
For me, I don’t like ads that insult my intelligence, like the new Kiss bread radio ad that tells me how much money I can save by buying Kiss and making a sandwich for lunch. Kiss can’t tell me anything about decreasing my food costs because they keep increasing the price of bread frequently, and the bread doesn’t even fill you. It feels like you’re eating air, and I know bread as light as that can’t have anything nutritious in it for me.
I love ads that entertain me, educate me, and make me laugh. Personally, I love the ads by entertainment promoters for those themed parties. They’re very creative, and most of all entertaining.
I think people have a problem with advertising when it’s absolutely wack, insults their intelligence, and has even the non-marketing type saying, what’s the point of this ad? What is it trying to achieve.

Thanks… SecondLife is going through a phase right now which gives strong evidence on this as well (which is really what started me off).
