Heath Ledger connected

Heath Ledger in A Knight’s Tale

Heath Ledger’s death was a shocker. The news came to me via Facebook. I’d logged on, and the first thing I saw was my friend Tracy’s status in my sidebar saying, “Tracy is shocked”. Heath Ledger is dead”. Immediately, I pulled up Google and typed in the words, “Heath Ledger, dead”, and the stories filled up my screen. I then also proceeded to change my Facebook status to express my own feelings about his death.

Like many others around the world, the fact that he is gone affected me on some level. I’m not going to act as if I was a personal friend of his or family member, and that I bear tremendous, permanent grief. But I liked his films; I liked him. I’ll always remember sitting watching “10 Things I Hate about You with my best friend”, both of us teenagers then, and professing how good-looking I thought he was. Plus, my mother and I watched “A Knight’s Tale” repeatedly.

Heath wasn’t the flashiest of stars, at least not in my eyes. He wasn’t forever craving the spotlight like Sean “Puffy”/ “Diddy” Combs. But he will be missed and remembered by those who appreciated his talent; people will think of how the acting world will miss his talent. People will flock to see Batman in their numbers, not because they were planning to do so anyway, but also because they want to see his last piece of work, which is reported to be classic enough to have great “memorability”.

Heath Ledger will be missed because he truly connected with his audience, and that by itself is something to think about. Connecting. Communicators make such a big deal about it, and rightly so. But what they forget at times is that connecting is as simple as being genuine in what you put onscreen, how you say it, how you internalise it, how you yourself connect to the message or role, and how you portray it. When audiences sense your passion, belief and ownership of something… when you’ve made your mark through whatever media, you’re well on your way to connecting. So rest in peace Heath, because you connected.

I was shocked as well. I dug his work. He always seemed to have nice roles; knights tale, 10 things, the patriot, 4 feathers which I think one could sort of relate to. He will be missed
